Matching my move for move, I pulled off the road into the office carpark, warily keeping an eye on the rearview mirror.

Different scenarios went through my mind as the following car did an abrupt 180 turn on the road, just outside the entrance.

The district of East Tamaki was not exactly known for its security, and break-ins have happened in broad daylight before. That's it, must be some unsavoury character looking for easy pickings...

Having heard the reassuring "clonk" of the door locks behind me, I briskly entered my office with a renewed sense of purpose and urgency. Keys were hit, and an email quickly materialised in front of every computer screen in the head office.

"Watch your possessions", it exhorted, bringing to attention this brazen, malignant plan.

Mission accomplished, I settled into the work routines of the day with a sigh of relief.

Within five minutes, the first emails of the day started to arrive in my inbox. One of them said,

"Hey. It was me. I park on the street."

I wonder whether he or I had a more embarassing day.

A bit of nostalgia

This post is dedicated to those who were in the Storm the Nations 2002 Tanzania team. Not containing its own battery power confines it to either the AC transformer or the car's cigarette lighter.

Everything else is well put together. The suction mount is secure in the windscreen, the LCD screen is watchable both in exterme glare and nighttime conditions, and the voice guidance is loud and clear.

Unfortunately it didn't work properly inside my car as it demands 5V and 2.5A... to put this in perspective a typical ten year old CD walkman uses 4.5V and 500mA. It was just too much juice for the cigarette lighter to provide, with the net result of the unit blacking out as soon as there is a decent load (eg. speech playback). This, and the lack of an internal battery, I deem to be a fatal design flaw (probably somwhat rectified in the iCN635).

Having said that, tried it in another car and it worked wonderfully as long as the electrical contact is secure. So, if you spot a cheap one, have a go as long as you have an opportunity to get a refund - like I did.

L-st in transit

I wonder how a suitcase that is checked-in all the way to Chile from Hong Kong via Auckland somehow ended up in the Auckland baggage carousel... which my relative somehow managed to pick up today...

Earlier in the afternoon I caught up with a friend and regaled her with my African stories - including the incident at Dubai/Nairobi. There's lots more people speaking broken English now, and there are cellphones everywhere! Now I know what to bring next time - of course charging the thing will remain a challenge.

Travel:

This time the travel was a separate adventure in itself. I volunteered to stay behind to chaperone another team member who had passport troubles and could not board the original flight. It was a miracle that we had confirmed seats four days later all the way to Dubai and then Nairobi. It was pretty normal until we landed in Dubai - the flight in was a bit late and for some reason I couldn't figure out which gate to go to for the connecting flight - managed to miss it! Amid panic and prayer we got standby tickets for the next flight six hours later and we were able to board it. The odds of that are quite slim since the flights were so full for the Christmas period.

Josh and I landed in Nairobi where Gerald (our Kenyan contact) was a legend in looking after us and finding us a good honest bus all the way to the Tanzanian border. To complicate things my main pack got lost... it appeared that it was not unloaded from the plane when we missed the flight from Dubai. Gerald managed to liaise with the lost baggage handlers and even ship the pack to the Tanzanian border (a bit of a messy place)

We crossed the border in Boxing Day and were quickly reunited with the teams :)

Inland travel across the Tanzanian terrain was by Toyota Landcruisers which were much more reliable than the vans in the previous missions. Nonetheless we have managed to blow a head gasket (I guess due to oil pressure failure). Our replacement vehicle was flash by local standards - electric windows, air conditioning, and a turbo under the bonnet :D

Ministry:

The villagers were generally very welcoming and they felt honoured to have visitors from afar. The team was excellent in overcoming the pockets of spiritual resistance. We have seen the blind recover their sight, the lame walk and other healings.

Serengeti National Park:

We had serious close-ups of lions, lots of other animals, but most elephants have already migrated. Gotta see the video to believe it!

Now What:

The one-month teams will leave in three days, and four of us will stay behind for another six weeks. Pirk of the starship Kickstart shipwrecked on the 21st century Earth with his crew. Originally from the distant future, Pirk and his crew travelled back in time to save the Earth from hostile aliens, but lost their ship and became stranded. Pirk's daily routine consists mainly of stuffing his face at the local fast food restaurant, and he is finding it difficult to convince the ladies he is, in fact, an intergalactic space hero from the future...
The quality of the production is amazing given that this is essentially a home-brew project. Unfortunately most of the humor gets lost in translation, nonetheless it's a good laugh for any sci-fi fans out there.

Biting off more than you can chew

A python tried to have an alligator for lunch. They are later categories ascribed to god...Those ideas are certainly present in some level of god's story, but I'm not sure how we're meant to deal with them."
I'd like to put in my "instant-noodle" cooked thoughts on that matter:

J-s-s probably doesn't believe in the ideas of the omni*s since #1. He chucked it away while on Earth to fulfill his mandate as the Son of Man, and, #2. He probably doesn't know anyway...

Before you bring out the stake, petrol and rope, I'll explain #2 further:

G-d exists outside our space-time, and there is only one like Him.

Humanity was created in G-d's image - living mirrors.

You do not know what you look like if you never saw a photo of yourself or your mirror image.

Moses managed to change G-d's mind at some point during their lives. Ummm, dare I say is that a blind spot?

From our point of view, since His thoughts are so much higher than our thoughts, (probably mainly due to the lack of space-time constraint), we correctly give Him the omni* labels.

Giving G-d due credit invites more of His presence...

Could it be that humanity serves as a point of reference and sounding-board in G-d's journey of self-discovery?

Predestined freewill?

Disclaimer - I am no theologian, and this post comes with no warranty whatsoever :)

A curious soul asked what my understanding of "predestined freewill" is - and here are my thought fragments on this matter:

1. By creating humanity with the capability to choose and setting up a scenario in which Adam and Eve must choose, G-d has predestined us to freewill.

So instead of abdicating moral responsibility: "X made me do it!", it's more like "X made me choose!"

2. Any "logical" attempts to reconcile predestination and freewill is doomed to fail since our "logic" is constrained by our understanding of Time as a serial construct. A countless number of rationalists and philosophers stumble and fall on this...

If the concept of Time is infinitely parallel, then this would not be a problem - although that means now (while we're existing in a serial Time) we won't be able to understand it at all.

Another African story (sort of)

I've been reading a story from an old friend of mine and it got me thinking again on why I like a place like Tanzania so much.

Walking down the driveway after finishing cell group, past the neighbours inside their comfy houses, getting into the extension of personal space called a car, driving to an intersection and making sure to get out of the way of other people...

Each day the cycle begins again, people getting along with their own lives by themselves, either avoiding or devouring each other...

It's different in a place out there like Africa. It's now almost tropical, which suits me just fine since my favourite countries tend to be hot anyway.

Finally something wrong with the car - 1x numberplate bulb, right-hand-side outer CV boot, and a brake warning which disappeared just as mysteriously as it came. All this found and fixed in one Saturday morning service at the dealer's.

Just done a week's worth of C# training. Another day, another chunk of code :)

It might be "back to the old routine" but these days seem to have an air of newness about them. Maybe I'm actually happy after all...

I've found this website about asperger's syndrome while thinking about a random acquaintence of mine. Interesting stuff in there - quite a few of the listed traits fits that person. But is a label like that really beneficial to the label-ee or does it doom him/her to being boxed-in to those stereotypes?

As of today...

1. Although both are needed for a good leader...

I would class "management" as the practical skills, competance and experience to marshall the necessary resources to get something done. A good manager, therefore would tell you what to do but also organise anything you need to get it done with.

Leadership would be the intrinsic character and attitude of the person concerned. A good leader should not feel entitled to boss it over others, have a listening ear, and willing to learn.

You can get more management skills easily enough. Universities tend to churn those out by the hundreds. There isn't much that can fix poor leadership, though.

Obviously, I'd rather be stuck under an incompetent leader (at least they can improve their management skills) than a good manager with bad leadership.

Random thoughts

In the course every now and then we are required to write some thoughts... thought (getit?) I'll dig up this one dated 18 March:

The ability to harness the constant stream of psuedo-random thoughts from one's imagination into an articulate form is the essence of storytelling - Me :)

The greater the vision, the greater the possibilities - Jerome Tuiala

It is easy to be sucessful, but staying that way is difficult. Come up with some brilliant, and somebody else always do better. There is always the fellow with more power, money, possessions, or apparent satisfaction than you. The trick is to not compare your lot with others, but be content with what you have.

Like a neighborhood of children in a remote African village with nothing but their rags who live happily and harmoniously with each other - as soon as one kid gets given something of perceived unique value (eg. a balloon), the equilbrium is lost, and all hell breaks loose as they now focus on that one thing.

Is the pursuit of excellence/perfection/sucess/whatever doomed to be at the expense of another person? One thing is for sure - it's like a rat in a roller cage that treadmills endlessly.

One must define the meaning of life for him/herself or else everything will look gray and meaningless, not to mention somebody else will impose their meaning on you!

Nice big update

Well it's about time I dusted off this thing...

So what's been happening... Quit my old job @ Pumpkin Patch, been to Africa and back, moved up to Snells Beach to do (i.e. beta test) some 3D animation course, all in the space of a few short months.

Now I know enough to photochop slightly better than the usual "Mr T vs ?" pictures, and just about to start on real motion picture work with (you might've guessed it), Premiere Pro.

With some form of internet access I can actually now start to update this and me website @ netfirms. But don't hold your breath though, I might lose my meagre audience ;)

Looking forward to OneThing this weekend...

Tchau!

Did I tell you this is just a test?

Hard-coding - predestination at its best.
Anyway this is the first entry, ever...
